The use of online materials to support the development of quantitative skills

Abstract

According to the available research, the Social Sciences are experiencing a quantitative skills gap. Recognising the pedagogical factors that complicate the formulation of an appropriate strategic response, this chapter discusses how the use of online provision can help address this deficit. It proposes a multifaceted approach for the creation of online resources, incorporating the following key features: active learning; experimentation; adoption of insights from pedagogical research; and a comprehensive application of the published empirical research. Deriving a threefold form of replication which encompasses all of these issues, it argues that success is ultimately dependent upon the willingness to confront pedagogical content knowledge. Meeting this challenge would ultimately engineer a ‘research-driven’ teaching experience in quantitative methods.
