Advancing the study of family firms through the use of experimental designs

Experimental studies allow researchers to better understand cause-effect relationships. Although these types of studies offer valuable insight into theoretical propositions, its application in the study of family businesses is limited. Part of this is a result of how the field has evolved, the focus on firm and family levels of analysis, and the type of research questions that have been explored so far. However, as the family business field works toward the development and testing of theory, the use of experimental methodology can contribute greatly. To enhance the use and understanding of experimental design, this chapter provides conceptual and practical guidelines for researchers to consider as they embark on the development of their experimental investigations.
