Abstract

This chapter explores efforts to prevent and end youth homelessness in the US We begin by reviewing what we know about the prevalence of homelessness among youth and the characteristics of youth who experience homelessness. Next, we describe the shift from a focus on interventions for youth experiencing homelessness to an emphasis on prevention and highlight prevention strategies being implemented in education, child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Then we summarize findings from a systematic review of research on interventions to improve the outcomes of homeless youth or prevent homelessness among youth deemed ‘at risk.’ Finally, we discuss direct cash transfers as an intervention to address the needs of youth experiencing homelessness and conclude with next steps for the field.
