Abstract

This chapter summarizes research evidence on what works to address family homelessness (sheltered, unsheltered, and doubled-up) in the realm of housing and human service solutions. It examines effective interventions to re-house families who become homeless (e.g. housing subsidies) and prevent it for families at risk (e.g. rental assistance, legal aid to prevent eviction). We end with discussing broader political, economic, and social changes need, including expanding affordable housing and the social safety net (welfare), addressing structural racism, and protecting rights of women and children. Most of the scholarship, policy, and programs the chapter reviews are from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
