Abstract

This chapter discusses how funding has influenced the performance of academics globally in the past 50 years. The analysis correlates the evolution of funding purposes and the conditions of sourcing funding with the changes observed in the academic profession and in universities. The main argument focuses on how scholarly activities have been influenced by changing funding schemes that increasingly prioritise research- and knowledge-exchange projects and dynamics. It also discusses how these activities have influenced recruitment and the career progression of academics.
