Abstract

The rapid development and distribution of digital technologies have significantly changed the modern life. Digitalization-driven transformations of the economy and society have been widely acknowledged and make the core focus of the contemporary policy agenda and corporate strategic planning – both nationally and globally. In this situation, the reliable and up-to-date statistical information is of critical importance, as it is supposed to allow evidence-based decision-making and fast reaction of governments and firms to new opportunities and risks generated by digital technologies and allied business models. Statistics of the digital economy is to meet this demand by analyzing the development and distribution of digital technologies, measuring access to them by businesses and households, and estimating the intensity and directions of subsequent digital transformations. The chapter describes the evolution of this branch of statistics and discusses its key methodological pillars and respective international standards. Particular attention is devoted to statistical classifications and indicators as well as data collection practices and sources of information.
