Abstract

Chapter One examines supply and demand of infrastructure investment, and the landscape of diversified development visions. It maps the multitrillion dollar global infrastructure market and highlights the imbalance between supply and demand for infrastructure investment. To solve the huge demands for infrastructure and investment gaps, there are competing development visions and development strategies. It is suggested that developing quality, sustainable, and inclusive infrastructure is imperative for the sustainable growth of emerging economies and developing countries. This chapter also addresses investment gap and bottleneck of regional infrastructure. Despite the financial gap, the “Achilles' Heel†of the Belt and Road Strategy is not a shortage of funds—there is a tremendous sum of public and private funds to be invested in infrastructure projects--but rather the lack of bankable projects. In other words, it is difficult for any megaproject initiator to earn a decent return from infrastructure projects in developing countries.
