Measuring the extra cost of disability: approaches, challenges, and prospects

Abstract

Individuals who experience disability commonly face additional costs for goods and services needed to participate in everyday life in ways similar to their non-disabled peers. Additionally, disabled individuals and their families frequently see a reduction in income as a result of both the disability and its associated caregiving needs. This chapter examines two critical factors in measuring the additional costs borne by those who experience disability: how disability status is operationalized and the available approaches for measuring those costs. Reviews and critiques are provided for each method, highlighting areas of potential improvement in their application. Multi-method studies with varying definitions of disability are suggested.
