Rethinking rural economy and family livelihoods

Abstract

This chapter engages with ideas of rural economy. However, rather than taking a conventional sectoral approach, we examine economy through the lens of household livelihoods. Our analysis is informed by recent research on changes in family and household dynamics, including changes in gender relationships and power dynamics within the family. Our focus is on the manner in which rural households make a living by combining resources gained from multiple activities in both the formal and informal economies, and by utilizing returns from the labour of multiple household members. This chapter also examines how local economies are embedded in broader national and global circuits of capital, labour and information. Similar to our examination of power in the settlement system in the previous chapter, we examine the agency of local rural communities in the context of national and global interdependencies.
