Activation: a research topic in its own right?

Abstract

While research on active labour market policies on the one hand, and unemployment protection on the other, go back a long way, academic analyses of activation are less than three decades old. Nevertheless, the topic has become a key area of social policy-oriented research on labour markets. The chapter discusses the origins of activation in international academic debate, before reviewing the diverse aims pursued within seminal publications. It reflects on ways in which the topic has been conceptualised in research, and concludes with a plea for more consistency in academic exchange based on the use of a mid-range concept of activation.
