Abstract

Since the mid-1990s the literature on relationships between intellectual property rights (IPRs) and international trade has grown deeper and broader. This chapter reviews recent developments, emphasizing novel empirical contributions. After highlighting difficulties in achieving clear results, the chapter discusses IPRs and innovation in an open economy, noting that trade policies importantly affect innovation incentives, as do other socioeconomic conditions. The chapter then reviews an extensive set of novel studies on various aspects of trade and IPRs. Among these are how trade openness and IPRs together may induce more innovation, how patent reforms influence high-technology exports, the effects of patent enforcement in destination countries, whether patent ownership raises export quality, the causation running from patents to exports, interactions between financial development and R&D, and how IPRs in preferential trade agreements influence bilateral trade and patenting. The chapter concludes with recommendations for additional important research areas.
