Abstract

Startups in sub-Saharan Africa are gaining international and local traction. The pace of startup creations and the increasing inflows of investments portend new dynamics in national innovation systems. This chapter explores the ongoing transformations in the sub-Saharan startup scenes. It brings updated evidence on the changing IP and innovation policy landscapes at the national and regional levels. Then it sheds light on the geography of venture capital funding and on the barriers to innovation faced by startups in the region. Taking inspiration from a recent case study by the author, the chapter also makes a set of recommendations for the strengthening of the startup environment and the sustainability of that environment in sub-Saharan Africa.
