How cultural traits shape patent rights across countries

Abstract

The global intellectual property landscape we see today was shaped by centuries of evolution. At the heart of this intellectual property landscape are patent rights, protections established by governments that grant inventors exclusive rights to their inventions for a specified period. This chapter explores the role of culture in shaping the patent rights landscape around the globe. In particular, it shows how Individualism-Collectivism explains societies’ attitudes towards the concept of patent rights, ultimately also determining the legal institutions of patent rights.
