Abstract

This chapter explores how MacIntyre extends Aristotle’s discussion of practical wisdom (phronesis) and explains its consequences for corporate governance. Using MacIntyrean categories, corporate governance is understood as a “second-order practice” in which institutions supply external and material resources to sustain and support “first-order” core practices with their internal goods. This understanding establishes criteria for good corporate governance, promoting not only “goods of effectiveness”, but also - and above all - “goods of excellence” such as the virtues in business organizations.
