Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of populism in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), in historical perspective as well as in terms of the state of research in the field and a more in-depth focus on the Visegrád Four (V4). As such, the chapter proceeds in three steps, first providing a brief overview of notable examples of populism in pre-1989 CEE, followed by a discussion of ongoing research debates surrounding the role of populism in ‘democratic backsliding’, the prevalence of ‘centrist’ or ‘radical’ populism and the generational dynamics of post-1989 populism in the region. This is followed by a condensed summary of comprehensive recent work on populist discourses in the V4 party systems from 1989 to 2020, featuring a periodized classification in terms of discursive and hegemonic types and thus providing an integrated diachronic account of different iterations and patterns of populism in the first 30 years after state socialism.
