Left and right

Abstract

The chapter’s goal is to map the main contemporary theories and debates around left and right populism. The first section of the chapter is dedicated to answering the question of whether there are, in fact, such things as left and right populism. Three possible answers to this question are presented and assessed: firstly, that all populisms are necessarily republican in nature; secondly, that all populisms are by definition illiberal, authoritarian and incompatible with democracy; and lastly, that populism is a form of politics that can adapt to and advance diverse ideological contents. The second section of the chapter proceeds in accord with the third position, i.e. that it makes sense to speak of right and left populisms as different varieties or embodiments of the same phenomenon. Finally, the chapter discusses the concepts of ‘punching downwards’ and ‘punching upwards’ populism.
