The historiography of the Armenian Genocide

The Armenian genocide is one of the four major cases of total genocides of the 20th century. The mass killing of 1.5 million of Armenians was organized by the Young Turks, a revolutionary organization that took over the power and ruled the Ottoman empire in 1908-1918. It was carried out through extermination of Armenian soldiers drafted in the Ottoman army, arrest and murder of national leaders and forced deportation in concentration camps designed in Syrian deserts. The narration of the event of such great magnitude went through different stages, starting with oblivion and diffident attempts to inform the world about the crime and tragedy and ending with one of the most developed, documented and analyzed events of the 20th century. Now the Armenian genocide is not a forgotten genocide, but the issue of international politics, matter of discussion in different parliaments, topic of numerous conferences, hundreds of books and integral part of educational curricula in different countries and theme of inspiration of many artists. In this article I attempt to make a brief picture of the development of the historiography of the Armenian genocide and making the Armenian genocide scholarship.
