Reframing the moment of first contact: lessons from the cinematic genre of science fiction

Abstract

My aim in this chapter is to alert teachers and scholars working in the field of genocide studies to the resources available to them in the cinematic genre of science fiction. The films discussed in this chapter are especially useful in explaining how (and why) an initial refusal of genocide on the part of a non-violent populace may give way over time to a grudging acceptance of discrimination, segregation, violence, and other measures that promote the normalization of genocide. In short, I submit, we stand to learn a great deal about ourselves, including our as-yet-unknown capacities for hatred and intolerance, from a thoughtful consideration of fictional human encounters with alien others.
