Abstract

This chapter explores the growing interest in how the public policy and academic research communities engage and the growing demand from the policy community for scientific and research evidence. It discusses obstacles to academics - policy engagement and the evolution of structures and processes to support such interactions. It considers the distinctive needs of different policy stakeholders and the variety of policy functions with which researchers can engage, including analysis, policy development, campaigning, scrutiny, and evaluation. It also reflects upon the uncertainties inherent in academic-policy engagement as well as the diversity of engagement routes and potential impacts upon public policy. It finishes by emphasising the crucial role of engagement in underpinning impact, and the need to embed academic-policy engagement within and across policy organisations and universities to support effective policymaking.
