Abstract

In framing the book, this chapter highlights the potential and significance of social science research to inform and impact public policy. The interest and emphasis on evidence-based policymaking has grown since the 1990s across both local and national government, offering insights to address evidence gaps and shape policy. The value and benefits of academic research to policy making activities are considerable, yet despite an abundance of opportunities there is still a lack of policy-academic engagement. In introducing the three parts of the book, there are 23 chapters showcasing a comprehensive collection with input from 42 contributors with a variety of backgrounds from academia and policy making spaces.
