Preventing violent extremism - Sport-based learnings from Kenya and Uganda

Abstract

This chapter explores the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of sport and sport-based programming to prevent violent extremism through sport. The use of sport as a setting or tool has gained increased attention in policy and practice, yet scientific evidence and practical application are yet in their infancy. In this chapter, we aim to contribute to this debate by introducing the five-zone approach to preventing violent extremism (PVE) through sport, and by illustrating this approach through empirical examples that draw upon the unique perspectives and experiences of youth in Kenya and Uganda. We conclude by reflecting on the main learnings from the five-zone approach and the empirical illustrations.
