Leadership - Time to re-purpose the pegs: youth leadership development through sport for a post-pandemic world

Abstract

In this chapter we set out what we feel are the important attributes of a growth process for youth leadership development, through sport, in a post-pandemic world. The process is one outcome of the global human rights and well-being project called U MATTER and is an analysis of 1,283 responses, from a 16 statement, Likert-style, global online survey which explored the psychology of mattering and the human need to be significant. The survey reflected the views of respondents from every continent, with the majority (52 percent) coming from Africa and with 87 percent being below the age of 25 years. These survey findings are enriched with what we are learning from an analysis of 87 recorded mattering stories from youths. An analysis of two of these stories is presented here. They are the lived experiences of a young woman and man who are deeply committed to the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in South Africa and specifically the Laureus Youth Empowerment through Sport (Y.E.S.) programme. The chapter identifies five leadership well-being ‘pegs’ which serve to focus and structure the growth process. They are security, inclusivity, attunement, appreciation and significance. The chapter concludes with the presentation of this growth process as a well-being, youth-focussed leadership development reflective framework.
