Abstract

This book consists of 23 chapters and discusses the current state of arts in tourism economics. All these chapters delved into the theoretical underpinning of each specific topic and provided tourism-specific examples to explain the application of relevant theories better. After summarizing the contents of book chapters, this chapter reviews major contributions to move the field forward, such as presenting a comprehensive structure of tourism economics, advocating philosophies in economics, providing guidance on econometric analysis, and bridging the gap between academics and practitioners. Lastly, the chapter considers eight primary future research directions in tourism economics , including the decision-making process of tourists, information economics and new technology, economic analysis of social and environmental impacts of tourism, spatial perspectives of tourism, tourism and happiness economics, tourism and public policy, integration of different topics/theories/methods, and COVID impacts.
