Abstract

The integration of the concept of mineral resource criticality within the life cycle impact assessment framework results from efforts to address questions on resource availability and accessibility in the context of environmental Life Cycle Assessment and within the overall framework of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA). Based on several methodological proposals and reviews, this chapter focuses on methods for product-level supply risk assessment, a group of methods reviewed and suggested by a task force on mineral resources under the UNEP’s Life Cycle Initiative. The chapter takes stock, presents three methods, and discusses conceptual issues. Overall, mineral resource criticality is regarded as relevant for economic life cycle assessment within LCSA, going beyond Life Cycle Costing (LCC).
