Abstract

The expectations of the international community on several occasions indicate that the use of life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) as a policy tool to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is indispensable. The implications are that there is a good understanding of systematic and coherent policymaking, including the optimal use of policy instruments based on the potential use of LCSA results. Lessons can be learnt from the earlier ‘integrated policy approach’ and the future ‘sustainable product initiative’ in the European Union. An important observation is the evolution from a single focus on the environmental dimension of sustainable development towards an approach taking the three dimensions into account. There are good practices all over the world. However, in order to meet the expectations by 2030, important efforts are needed.
