Sustainability product declarations for communicating LCSA results in sustainable procurement

Abstract

The development of a Sustainability Product Declaration (SPD) within the framework of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) can follow the same procedure as for the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) according to ISO 14025. An SPD can create opportunities for direct contacts between companies and experts during the LCSA calculations and verification process and generate different types of background data that otherwise would be difficult and expensive to obtain. With this, SPDs contribute not only to acquiring information of special importance for sustainable procurement but also to the gradual building up of generic databases of sustainability indicators for various product categories. This type of information is especially relevant for emerging regions where access to product sustainability data is limited, thereby restricting the adoption of LCA-based methodologies. Recommendations for expanding from EPDs to SPDs are provided in this chapter.
