The relationship between public health and medical tourism

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to examine the relationship between public health and medical tourism, which includes many interactions between the two. The first step to achieve this goal consists in the description of medical tourism phenomena, their implications and their role in delivering medical services. It is argued that the main motivation for travelling abroad is shortcomings of the health system in the country of residence. In the second paragraph special attention is paid to public health as part of a health system. Afterwards a case study is presented, which provides inspiration for the next section. At the end, the interplay between inbound and outbound medical tourism as well as the performance of the health systems is discussed. It is argued that outbound medical tourism is not only influenced by the health system in the country of origin but can also cause changes in it. Likewise, the development of inbound medical tourism is highly influenced by the destination country.
