Abstract

Higher education is being digitalised more and faster than ever before, making it even more important to understand the platforms and surrounding systems which are underpinning this change. This chapter examines the role of education technology in contemporary and emerging education transformations. It discusses platform and application ecosystems, significant financial arrangements, the nature of integration so far, contemporary innovation frontiers, and steps ahead for education design and development. The analysis draws on available research, distils environmental scans, and presents case studies. Achieving at least basic knowledge of digitalisation, the chapter concludes, is essential to understanding and navigating higher education.
