The impact of digitalisation on higher education teaching in Germany

Abstract

This chapter aims to clarify the impact of digitalisation on German higher education (HE) teaching. It is assumed that digitalisation is not a quasi-automatic process overwhelming the HE system and institutions, but a process that is shaped by various actors. Two research questions are addressed: What does digitalisation mean for the transformation of HE teaching regarding the different levels and actors in HE? Which mechanisms are operating and which structures are created? The theoretical framework of this chapter includes the translational perspective and the neo-institutional approach to explain the impact of digitalisation on HE teaching. The study followed the systematic review approach. With regard to the first research question, modernisation and profile building, cooperation and competition were identified as interpretations of digitalisation. In response to the second research question, normative pressure, imitation, and translation emerged as the central mechanisms of the digitalisation of HE teaching.
