Abstract

How might make work and employment in the cultural industries be made fairer and more just? This chapter outlines some of the sociological theories available to researchers of cultural work who are concerned with addressing workplace injustices and inequalities and developing frameworks for what I term ‘creative justice’ - a fully realised opportunity for all publics to participate in the vital process of professional culture-making. It explores three kinds of sociological approach: an ‘objectivist’ critical sociology informed by political economy and cultural studies, the work of Pierre Bourdieu, and pragmatic sociological theory as exemplified in the work David Stark - evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each as a foundation for theorising ‘creative justice’.
