Abstract

Self-defense is the most commonly cited exception to the international law prohibition on the use of force. This chapter explores the application of the law of self-defense, beginning with an in-depth look at the meaning of armed attack and imminent armed attack, the trigger for any use of force in self-defense. It then provides a thorough discussion of necessity, proportionality, and immediacy, the three criteria for the lawful use of force in self-defense, before turning to analyze contemporary challenges such as the role of non-state actors and the application of the law of self-defense in cyberspace and outer space.
