Abstract

The concept of “transitional justice,” a term coined in the early 1990s, encompasses the objectives of transitioning from war to peace and from repression to the rule of law, and the broad range of mechanisms designed for and essential to the pursuit of this objective. It thus encapsulates efforts to achieve a just and peaceful society based on the rule of law out of the ashes of violence, dictatorship, and other oppressive environments. This chapter first discusses the core principles and themes of transitional justice and then details the primary mechanisms that form the basic “toolkit” of this important field.
