Rethinking healthcare and welfare

Abstract

The advent of Covid-19 has forced a rethinking of healthcare with aspiration to universal healthcare. The pandemic has shed light on flaws within healthcare systems worldwide and enforced the belief that universal healthcare (UHC) is the key to pandemic management. Without universal coverage, at least with respect to Covid-19, the mortality and infection rates are bound to be higher. However, UHC on its own cannot alleviate the suffering caused by unemployment, poverty and food insecurity, which is why the pandemic has also attracted attention to the concept of universal basic income on a temporary or permanent basis. A widespread belief has arisen that what is needed is a new New Deal, following the original New Deal that was put in place during the Great Depression of the 1930s.
