Brexit: populist reaction to the 2008 speculative bubble bursting?

Abstract

The paper explores the idea of Brexit as a populist reaction following the burst of the speculative bubble in 2008-2009 and the subsequent economic mayhem. It looks at what populism is, how it can arise as part of long-term economic waves, and how this applies to the UK. If the analysis is correct, the answer lies in strengthening the safety net to soften economic blows, in teaching people to build their opinions from a wide range of sources, in reinforcing the constitution, fundamental rights and the rule of law holding society together, and in clarifying in simple language what the EU actually does.
