Abstract

This chapter examines the use of visual research methods in the study of housing. Visual research methods refers to the use of physical or digital visual materials at various stages of research from data collection and data analysis, to the viewing of the image by various audiences. Various methods are presented and discussed in terms of the extent to which control over the production of materials is shared between researchers and participants, and whether the materials are used as representations of housing or to spur discussions of its meaning. The survey of these methods includes those that rely on photography, video, mapping, and art. Though the review identifies a number of examples of the use of these methods in the study of housing, and their growing appeal to researchers, there are lingering questions about their unique contributions to our understanding of this complex area of study.
