Abstract

This chapter introduces the telecommunication elements that are necessary to run a city. It starts with an introduction of telecommunication, and some of the different types of communications for a city. We then discuss a city in the context of the contemporary smart city phenomenon; for this purpose, the city is depicted as one that is intuitive and responsive to the needs of its citizens. From here, we discuss the important telecommunication elements that make the city intuitive and responsive, including data sharing. We also discuss 5G technology and the important role it plays in the modern connected city. IOT connectivity is also discussed, including the suitability of LPWAN-type connectivity to power up the super-connected city. The chapter also looks at the cloud infrastructure needed to manage the tremendous amount of data produced by a modern city, as well as other enablers such as a centralized city platform, open API and service applications. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the challenges faced in relation to telecommunication infrastructure in cities, including commercial and technical challenges. This chapter has been written for non-technical readers and has sought to keep technical jargon to a minimum.
