Abstract

Chapter 2 explores the rise of what has been called ‘GPN 2.0’, an approach seen by its advocates as an attempt to build a ‘state-of-the-art’ understanding of GPNs. The chapter then engages with the burgeoning literature on what has come to be known as ‘Industry 4.0’ or ‘i4.0’, which involves the application of smart technology to propel advanced manufacturing. We suggest that neither the updated GVC and GPN 2.0 approaches nor the literature on i4.0 have paid sufficient attention to contemporary changes in the labour process, how these are affecting labour, and how, in turn, labour is responding to them.
