EAEU and economic sanctions

Abstract

From the very beginning, the EAEU developed in the shadow of economic sanctions and conflicts. The chapter reviews multiple sanctions episodes of 2015–2022 and discusses their implications for the EAEU. It looks, in particular, at the sanctions imposed by the EU and the US against Russia in 2014–2015; Russian agricultural counter-sanctions; as well as massive sanctions following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The chapter considers various mechanisms of how sanctions affected the EAEU, and discusses the possible avenues of transformation of the organization in the future triggered by sanctions.
