Value from virtue: the construction of provenance in ethical value networks

Abstract

This chapter presents a theoretical reflection on the process of virtue-making. It begins with the notion of 'fictive place' as it applies to Geographical Indications but extends this line of thinking to the other two ethical constellations of sustainability and social justice. We move from notions of active 'place-making' as an economic process, to explore the concept of provenance. We see provenance as more than just a record of the social and spatial history of a product: it is also a process of building, disseminating and protecting such histories. Finally, we argue that such 'provenancing' is a key element of ethical value networks, both requiring the networks to exist in order to construct and embed the narratives of authenticity, sustainability and social justice as well as reinforcing the networks in the process.
