Abstract

This chapter introduces the edited book Ethical Value Networks in Global Trade. It outlines the concept of EVeNs and traces the rise of ethical consumption in response to the uneven globalised agro-food economy. The rise of EVeNs has been led by a series of social movements and labelling strategies in which Northern purchasers 'vote' via consumption. This has led to a rise in market-based solutions that seek to incorporate an ethical dimension in global agro-commodity trade. This spans initiatives and movements such as fair trade, organic production and geographical indications. The chapter poses several questions that are addressed through the collection.
