Abstract

Machiavelli’s political thought seems defined by the vagaries of his own life as well as the Renaissance thought that formed its backdrop but that he would later also come to define. As such, he grappled with the moral nature of man, the effects of class struggle on regime stability and well-being, as well as Christianity, Greek Revivalism, and the nature of the good regime. The chapter provides an overview of the debates and tendencies on each of these topics of Machiavelli studies, and concludes with a brief discussion of emerging trends in the discipline.
