Marsilius of Padua

In: Research Handbook on the History of Political Thought

Abstract

Marsilius of Padua was a fourteenth-century political theorist whose ideas on many political topics—i.e. the people, law-making, government, etc.—are particularly original in his own context and for their significance in the history of political thought and today. In recent years, this thinker has indeed joined Aquinas as one of the major figures in late medieval political thought. The chapter provides a short introduction to his political thought and surveys the most recent discussions in the scholarly literature on this author, making him accessible to both historians of political thought and political theorists.
