Abstract

The one figure who is generally identified as the paragon of political theory during the Western European Middle Ages is Thomas Aquinas. While this claim may be overstated if applied to its own time, Aquinas has certainly exercised an outsized influence on later political thought in the Christian tradition up to the present day. The chapter considers some of the main themes highlighted by scholars. These include his relation to the newly received body of writings by Aristotle, his conception of the foundations of human community, his evaluation of different constitutional systems, and his ideas concerning the nature of law, including natural law.
