Abstract

This chapter offers a guide to the major themes of the scholarly debates concerning the status of politics in Augustine’s thought. I begin with a summary of Augustine’s life and context before discussing several of the dominant interpretations of Augustine as an otherworldly, pessimistic, liberal, and secularist thinker, as well as responses to and criticisms of these interpretations. I close with some brief ideas about where more research on Augustine’s political thought might be fruitful.
