Abstract

In the nineteenth century, the fall of throne and altar raised the question about what new modern form of community would support modern politics. Most nineteenth-century thinkers were uneasy with the only alternative at the time—classical liberalism with its contractual basis for community. This chapter focuses on the main alternative forms of community proposed among nineteenth-century figures. Moreover, it shows that there is current debate in the field as to how compatible liberalism is with these new forms of community.
