Reformation

In: Research Handbook on the History of Political Thought

Abstract

The Reformation had enormously consequential effects on modern political thought; it brought programmatic reform to church, government, and society alike. For major reformers, political thought was an integral part of their projects, though there was no simple uniformity to Reformation political ideas and practice between and among confessions. Thus, the legacy of Reformation for political thought is complicated and at times even contradictory.
