Leo Strauss and Straussianism

Abstract

Leo Strauss’s influence is most obvious in his success establishing a school of philosophy, primarily during his time at the University of Chicago. Attention to his work shows that this success was not accidental to but rather an essential part of his philosophic project. A proper understanding of the Straussian school thus requires an appreciation of Strauss’s intention within the American academy, how the path of his thinking informs his teaching and thus underpins that intention, and the success or obstacles that he and his legacy have faced then and face now. In this chapter, the author presents a holistic appreciation of Strauss’s works with an eye to understanding his loftier ambitions and actual expectations of what he could achieve within the American academy.
