Abstract

Recent years have witnessed a resurgence of interest in the tradition of republican political thought pioneered in Roman antiquity and carried forward by medieval and Renaissance theorists into early modern Europe. This chapter surveys some of the most iconic and representative figures in the development of republicanism, including Cicero, Brunetto Latini, Ptolemy of Lucca, Leonardo Bruni, Niccolò Machiavelli and James Harrington. Along the way, it engages with contemporary neo-republicans who wish to recuperate republicanism as a remedy for the defects of liberal-democratic theory and practice.
