Regional management of stranded hydro-carbon assets and the energy transition

Abstract

This chapter discusses the issue of the transition to low-carbon development pathways in Africa. The author argues that a deliberate and carefully managed transition to a low-carbon economy is necessary, but it requires planning and vision, as well as a regional strategy to avoid being taken advantage of in bilateral discussions. The author further suggests that Africa can learn from the successes of other regions, such as the EU Green Deal, and take advantage of its resources and ability to speak with one voice at the regional level to boost inter-regional trade prospects. In this sense, the chapter argues that corporate governance can play a crucial role in promoting sustainable development by aligning the interests of shareholders and management with the long-term sustainability of the company and society as a whole.
