United Kingdom. An overview of its mental health policies and services

Abstract

This chapter reviews the ongoing development of mental health policies and services in the United Kingdom, including its extended history, current achievements, and challenges. It concludes that although the nation's mental health system is one of the better developed in the world, given its comprehensiveness, integrated management, and accountability systems, it has been overly cautious and lacked innovation. This has particularly been the case in respect to its community mental health system and its linkages with the broader field of social welfare, including mental health services in criminal justice. The system has moved substantially to deinstitutionalize its mental hospitals, and is now working on fine-tuning and integrating it, including increasing access, parity with medical care, and enhancing patient rights. Among its most pressing challenges, recently exacerbated by UK's exit from the European Union (EU), has been assuring a sufficient mental health workforce.
